William Hal Ashby (2 septembre 1929 - 27 décembre 1988) était un réalisateur et monteur américain.
Il faisait partie de la nouvelle vague cinématographique hollywoodienne.
Avant de faire carrière dans la réalisation, Ashby a monté des films pour son collègue Norman Jewison, notamment The Russians Are Coming, The Russianans Are Coming (1966), qui lui a valu une nomination aux Oscars pour le meilleur montage, et In the Heat of the Night (1967), qui lui a valu son seul Oscar dans la même catégorie.Ashby a reçu une troisième nomination aux Oscars, cette fois pour la meilleure réalisation pour Coming Home (1978) mais perdu pour Michael Cimino, qui l'a emporté sur The Deer Hunter.
Ashby a également réalisé The Landlord (1970), Harold et Maude (1971), The Last Detail (1973), Shampoo (1975), Bound for Glory (1976), Being There (1979), The Slugger's Wife (1985) et 8 Million Ways to Die (1986).
